Explore China; Opportunities in the Chinese Market Event

A big thank you to Newable for inviting TTIP to speak at the Explore China event at the Arora Hotel Gatwick/Crawley on Tuesday 25th June 2019. ‘Explore China; Opportunities in the Chinese Market’, was sponsored by the Department for International Trade (DIT) and part funded by the European Regional Development Fund, to help small businesses with building and growing export business to China.

The agenda was chaired by Colin Melhuish of the DIT, and included expert speakers covering a wide variety of topics important to any business considering taking their first steps into, or expanding their presence in, the Chinese market, including; 

  • Chinese Business Culture and Developing Business Relationships

  • How to Protect Your Intellectual Property in China

  • Practical Issues of Doing Business in China

  • Digital Landscape and E-Commerce

  • Distribution and Partnership Contracts in China

  • Bank Support








TTIP’s Managing Director, Dr Andy Wynn, presented the final session of the day, Building a Manufacturing Business in China’;

'To deliver the forecast growth potential of many industries, manufacturing companies need to look East, to where the big growth is happening. This is particularly relevant, as several European markets are forecast to lose some market share to the growing Asian regions in the coming years. China’s 14 trillion USD economy is still growing at 6% and is forecast to surpass the US by 2030 to become the world’s largest economy. Growth is fuelled by increasing demand across many sectors, both domestically and across the Asian region, especially for consumer electronics and advanced medical technologies. But many Western businesses struggle to know where to start or how to approach China, or are trying to build presence in the market but struggling to succeed.'

'Using real world examples from the many factory projects, joint venture negotiations and numerous business start-ups that Andy was involved with in China, this presentation highlights the many challenges that Western businessmen experience in trying to take their Western style of doing business to China and explains how to deal with them. Political involvement, a different approach to drawing up legal contracts, and Chinese style negotiation techniques are just some of the situations covered.'

Andy said about the day, ‘Great to pass on my experiences of living in and doing business in China to such a receptive audience. Some great speakers on the agenda and made many new friends. And a great opportunity to talk about my forthcoming book ‘The Biggest City You’ve Never Heard Of’, about the daily challenges of life and business for a Westerner in China, due for publication in a few weeks’ time. A really enjoyable day, and many thanks to Sam and the Newable team for being such great hosts.’
